BREWING TEMPERATURE CONTROL CHAMBER

Beer Fridge
2001
After brewing successful batches of Brown Ale, India Pale Ale, and Extra Special Bitter, I craved a Lager. A good Lager is challenging because the yeast's incubation temperature is around 75 F but it grows best at about 47 F. I made this climate control chamber out of a mini-fridge. A PIC 16F877 controls a compressor and a 60 Watt light bulb (shielded with aluminum foil). Two remote thermistors monitor temperature. If the system senses a temperature gradient, a circulating fan is activated. The average of the two sensors is used to hold the temperature to within 1F of the adjustable set point. Steady temperatures from 30 to 80 F are maintainable.
