WATER PRINTER

Water Droplet Display
1996
Inspired by a fountain seen on “Beyond 2000,” this horizontal row of valves was supposed to form graphics from falling drops of water. When I attempted it, I hadn't had any Microchip experience. I experimented with solenoid valves and pressurized nozzles. A stroboscope showed me that a pressurized nozzle is essential or gravitational acceleration will elongate the graphics. It also showed me that I needed faster valves. This is on the long list of ideas I want to further develop. Now that I have fluid dynamics and Microchips under my belt, I'm anxious to get this one working. The concept model pictured here includes a compressor, resevoir, and eight solenoid valves.
